Breaking Bad: Season 4 (TV Review)

Warning: May contain major spoilers for seasons 1-3.

Breaking Bad, Season Four:
The dark and twisted tale of Walter White's rise and fall continues: After Jesse Pinkman reluctantly murdered Gale, the cook Gus chose to replace Walt, Gus begins taking steps to secure the lab. Gus even puts in cameras to monitor the lab and it's cooks at all times. Hank (still recovering from the attack on him by The Cousins) and the DEA begin an investigation into Gale's murder and Hank begins suspecting Gus may have something to do with it. Jesse begins to try to better himself, and is taken under the wing of Mike, who lets Jesse help him out on several jobs for Gus. Skyler finds out her old employer Ted Beneke is in financial trouble, which may affect her negatively as well. Gus' dark and tragic past is further explored. Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul really shine in this season. Walt becomes less sympathetic and more despicable, and Cranston pulls off that transition and inner struggle really well. Paul is great because he also faces a huge inner struggle because he wants to better himself, but it's a little hard because he's already deep inside the drug world. Anna Gunn, Dean Norris, Giancarlo Esposito, Jonathan Banks, RJ Mitte, Betsy Brandt, Bob Odenkirk, Steven Michael Quezada, Emily Rios, Charles Baker, Matt L. Jones, David Costabile, Christopher Cousins, Mark Margolis, Jeremiah Bitsui, Michael Shamus Wiles, Jere Burns, and Marius Stan all return from the previous season, and they all do a fantastic job. Cousins' character Ted is a lot more of a selfish douche this time around, not as likeable as before. Newcomers include Ray Campbell, Lavell Crawford, stand-up comedian Bill Burr, Maurice Compte, Nigel Gibbs, and Steven Bauer, who all give great performances. Bill Burr and Lavell Crawford make a good comedic relief duo, and Campbell plays the cold and threatening Tyrus Kitt, the bodyguard of Gus Fring. Bauer plays Don Eladio, leader of the Juarez Cartel in Mexico. Compte plays Gaff, a skilled assassin and enforcer of the Cartel. There is a lot more action in this season. It's intense and nerve-racking. One episode in particular, near the end of the season, called "Crawl Space", has an ending sequence that is insanely tense and exhilarating. This season has a lot more shocks and surprises than before, and it's even more well-written than before. The new characters are fantastic and are welcome additions to the series, and the climax of the season is satisfying and unexpected. Breaking Bad: Season Four has to be one of the best TV seasons ever written. It's definitely one of the best, if not the best of the entire series. 5/5 stars.
