Eight Legged Freaks: A cheesy, self-aware B-movie (Halloween reviews)

Today, I look at the 2002 B-movie parody/homage from the team behind Independence Day and the Godzilla remake.

Eight Legged Freaks:
In a quiet Arizona mining town, pets and other animals begin to go missing. When humans begin to disappear, the local sheriff and her old love interest (who recently returned to town) begin investigating, and realize the problem is a lot worse than they thought: the town has been overrun with overgrown arachnids. The movie stars David Arquette (Scream) and Kari Wuhrer, and features Doug E. Doug, Scott Terra, and a young Scarlett Johansson. I used to like it a lot as a young kid, but in recent years, I've viewed it a few more times, and I've realized it's just okay. It's a decent homage to stupid B-movies of the 50's (the Atomic Age of entertainment), but it's a little short and the CG hasn't aged too well. It's also less thrilling and more of a comedy, which makes the film a bit uneven at times, because there's some fucked up moments where people are painfully eaten alive, and those dark moments kind of overshadow the comedy. It's also really not all that funny, so it kind of fails as a spoof. But there's enough scary movie references to keep fans happy, and there's some cool moments, so I was say it might be worth a viewing. Eight Legged Freaks is a bit uneven and mediocre, but it's decent enough. I would recommend it to younger kids (like 3rd or 4th graders) or tweens, but other than that, it's probably a skip. 2/5 stars.
